The Sky Blues will secure the premiership if they defeat Central Coast on Friday night and second-placed Melbourne Victory fail to win against Perth Glory on Saturday night.

Despite the significance of winning the premiership, a trophy that Arnold labelled as the most important during his Central Coast days, he insisted his players wouldn’t be celebrating, with a view to an A-League record points tally and the championship.

“Not a chance, no chance,” Arnold said. “That’s what the other teams want.

“The other teams want us to celebrate and take our foot off the pedal. That’s not going to happen.

“It’s about driving this team to be better and better. We know we’ve still got a lot left in us.

“Last week was a good performance. The improvement side is we had 18 shots to five, so we should’ve converted more.

“Until we get that ruthless streak then we’re letting the opposition stay in the game. That’s where the improvement needs to happen.”

Arnold remains transfixed on the A-League record points tally, currently held by Western Sydney Wanderers in a 27-round season, with 57 during the 2012/13 campaign.

Sydney are four points off that mark with five games to go and Arnold won’t let up.

“From day one it’s about driving the team to become the best team in A-League history,” he said.

“That’s all we’re driving. We’ve got seven games to go, five in the A-League, it’s about winning those five games and getting better each game and making history and creating a few records.”

Arnold also praised Socceroos duo Danny Vukovic and Rhyan Grant, saying their call-ups were individual reward for team performance.

He also said he felt there were a few others in the team disappointed to miss out, likely central defender Alex Wilkinson.

“I feel we’ve got a couple of boys in there who feel a bit hard done by as well,” he said.

“They feel they’ve been in good form as well. It’s about them keeping on improving and maybe they’ll be next.”
