Sydney FC coach Graham Arnold says marquee striker Bobo has come to Australia with attitude and character to excel in the A-League.
The Brazilian forward set up two goals and scored another, his first for his new club, in last night’s 3-0 FFA Cup quarter-final win over Blacktown City. Arnold said he was pleased with Bobo’s eye-catching performance at Edensor Park.
“It’s only one game but the thing about him is his character’s perfect,” he said.
“He’s come out here with the right attitude. I gave him the option, because the field is obviously different, whether he wanted to start tonight or come off the bench, and he was adamant he wanted to start.
“He set up two goals and scored one and works extremely hard for the team, so far so good. You can see a little bit the combination between him and Filip from the Besikitas days, they know each other’s game.
“What’s pleasing for me is the way he works for the team. He works hard, he’s not selfish, he’s looking for the other players when’s he got the ball and he’s only going to get fitter.
“The type of player he is he needs service. He makes good forward runs and it’s a matter of us seeing them. We’re not seeing them all the time but we’re working hard at training to combine with him.”
Bobo assisted in Filip Holosko and David Carney’s goals, then grabbed his own in the second half. Arnold believesd the Brazilian would get fitter and more settled in Australian with time.
“Fitness-wise he’s about 60%, he can get much fitter,” he said.
“As we all can, the whole team. It’s early days yet, his wife and children aren’t here and he’s missing them. The visa hasn’t come through and once they’re here I’m sure he’ll be even more settled.”
Sydney FC dominated Blacktown City in a one-sided clash to book their spot in the Cup semi-finals. They will find out their opponent next week.
“It’s about progression,” Arnold said.
“Our win against Brisbane was scratchy at times, our performance against Wollongong wasn’t flash, our performance against Perth was good and tonight we put it together.
"What’s pleasing for me is the attitude. We knew Blacktown were going to throw everything at us early on and if we didn’t have the right attitude it could have made a very difficult night for us.
“But the boys’ talk in the dressing room was very good before the game, about being ruthless and keeping the intensity high and this is preparation for round one.”
