CENTRAL Coast coach Graham Arnold wasn't getting carried away with Saturday's 1-0 friendly win over Celtic but said it was a great experience for his side to face top opponents.
The Mariners netted a late winner through Troy Hearfield, however Celtic appeared the better side throughout a contest of few chances.
However, Arnold told reporters after the game he felt his side performed well against top opposition.
“Overall I thought we played well. It’s the first time the boys have played in this stadium, and to play a powerhouse side like Celtic was fantastic for them,” Arnold said.
“They don’t have their history for no reason. They’re a top side, with some outstanding players.
“It was a great chance to see Australian players test themselves against that type of opposition.”
Arnold said he was particularly impressed by his backline led by Patrick Zwaanwsijk which held firm against Celtic's attacking efforts.
“I thought our defensive structure was again good tonight, although we were rusty in our execution in the final third,” Arnold said.
However, Arnold added he felt his side played Celtic at the right time having just arrived in Australia after the long journey from the United Kingdom.
“It’s their first game, so we played them at the best time in their tour,” Arnold said.
