Socceroos coach-in-waiting, Graham Arnold, says he's learnt his lesson from his previous time in charge and is now a new man to lead Australia.
Football Federation Australia (FFA) announced Graham Arnold will take over the Socceroos head coaching role immediately following the 2018 World Cup.
Arnold previously guided Australia between 2006 and 2007, to the quarter finals of the 2007 Asian Cup.
He drew some criticism for Australia's performance at that tournament, however 11 years later, he claims he's a "completely different person".
"I learnt from my mistakes in 2007," Arnold said. "You can’t hide from that. I’m a completely different person now. You never stop learning.
"I’m the first to admit that I did my career back to front. Normally you go through the coaching badges...I didn’t coach a club team and went straight through to the national team."
When he did eventually begin his A-League career, Arnold was almost immediately successful, winning the 2011 A-League Premiership and 2013 A-League Championship with Central Coast Mariners.
He also won the domestic treble of A-League trophies in 2017 with Sydney FC. His challenge now will be to reunite Australian football for the long-term under a local coach, after the departure of Ange Postecoglou.
"I want to continue Ange’s legacy of being proud Australians, taking pride every time we put on the shirt," Arnold said.
"It’s clear that Ange had a fantastic staff, with what they accomplished...so it’s going to take me a little bit of time to learn and watch."
