SYDNEY FC’s Stuart Musialik is still no certainty for Graham Arnold’s 18-man Olyroo squad for the Beijing Olympics after an indiscretion saw him miss a recent friendly against Mexico.
“I’ve had a chat to his agent about it. Stuey was brought in front of FFA and was told his behaviour was unacceptable.
“I’ll decide over the next few weeks and months if Stuey warrants coming back into the squad,” Arnold said this morning.
It’s understood Musialik missed a team gathering ahead of the Mexico friendly in the US in late February, and was accordingly dropped from the side that went on to draw 1-1.
“He knows he let everyone down and he’s got to prove to me that he wants to come back [into the squad]," added Arnold.
The Olyroos will face Serbia, Argentina and the Ivory Coast at the group stage of the Beijing tournament in August.
“You’re never going to get an easy draw. Overall it’s a draw that’s tough but the weather conditions [in China] hopefully will be an advantage to us after playing the last couple of years in Asia," said Arnold.
“Argentina already announced Riquelme and Mascherano will be there and the Ivory Coast have said Didier Drogba and Toure as their over-aged players.
“But we’re going there to be successful. We want to get through the group stage and see how we go from there. With a tournament of 16 teams, you get through the group stage and you’re into the quarter finals.”
Arnold also hinted that the over-age players for the Olyroos will be selected for the front half of the side and will be chosen over the next couple of months.
However, Arnold said that his 18-man squad – which includes three keepers and three over-age players – will be at least partly based on those who can handle the hot conditions in China.
The Olyroos head to Malaysia next month for a tournament with a further 12-13 games planned ahead of the tournament in August.
The Aussie players won’t be involved the Olympics opening ceremony as they will be in Shanghai for the first game the day before.
