Former Australia coach Graham Arnold has backed Ange Postecoglou’s Socceroos to qualify comfortably for the 2018 World Cup despite three successive draws.
The Socceroos dropped to third spot in their group following Wednesday morning’s 2-2 draw with the previously pointless Thailand.
Arnold, who was in charge of the Socceroos at the 2007 Asian Cup, was involved in several World Cup qualifying campaigns during his playing days.
The Sydney FC boss said he believes Australia are on track, despite public concerns about the side’s stalling campaign.
“We’re in a fantastic position,” Arnold said.
“In my experiences of about seven World Cup campaigns and 2010 in Asia, you draw your away games, win your home games, you qualify easily. Ange has got us on track.
“It’s a tough place to go Thailand. People underestimate the conditions, the state of the ground, whether the preparation was right or wrong. I thought the preparation was perfect.
“Thailand were up for it. Okay we had an off day but we still got a point.”
Holger Osieck and Pim Verbeek led Australia to World Cup qualification previously through Asia, but earned criticism for their style.
Arnold insisted qualifying was Postecoglou’s key job.
“It’s about qualifying and we’re on target,” he said.
“As I said, if you win your home games, draw your away games, you qualify easily and we will.”
Meanwhile, Arnold brushed off talk of the significance of Sydney FC breaking records.
If Sydney defeats Brisbane Roar on Friday night they would equal the best-ever start to an A-League season.
“It’s only the start. Records don’t really interest me,” he said.
“It’s about getting better with every performance.
“What I’m really happy about at the moment is the belief from within the squad.
“There’s a lot of belief and when there’s belief then the players take a lot of ownership in what we’re doing.
“They buy into the process of what we’re doing. You can see they’re a happy group but a motivated group as well.
“As I said, records don’t mean anything. It’s about getting better every week.”
