Sydney FC head coach Graham Arnold has lauded Alex Brosque for the influence the skipper has had on the team’s success this season.
Brosque missed 14 games last season which coincided with Sydney going on an 11-game winless streak in the second half of the season and miss the finals.
But it’s been a different story this campaign, with Brosque missing only one game during the season.
Arnold said the 33-year-old will be a key contributor in what Sydney hopes to achieve in 2016-17.
“Everyone knows what a high-quality player Alex Brosque is and what a huge difference he would make to any side,” he said speaking to FourFourTwo.
“As a captain and leader on and off the field he has played a major role in getting us to this point and will play an even bigger role as we head into the finals series.”
In return Brosque has also given Arnold high praise for turning around Sydney’s fortunes this season with the Sky Blues only win away from winning the Premiers Plate.
“Last year we probably didn’t handle the ACL or the league all that well but this year Arnie was able to tweak things a little bit, he said speaking to FourFourTwo.
“The players he added to this squad the reason behind this season. He’s added so much quality to the players that were already here and with new additions those players have gone up to another level as well.
“So, the squad that we have now is incredible, the boys in the change room and all that goes with it is so important in the A-League is where it needs to be and it’s great to be in position to win silverware again.”
Looking back on Sydney’s performances, Brosque said it’d been a joy to be involved in the attacking football the Sky Blues have played throughout their history-making campaign.
“It’s been great because it’s not very often that you get to see all work that you do in training be executed out on the pitch on the weekends, he said.
“Because it’s one thing to do it on a training pitch unopposed but then to go out and feel that same enjoyment doing it against good opposition and to see goals come from it, it’s been great.
“When we do video analysis and look back on the goals we scored a lot of it is drills that we’ve seen from that week in training. That comes down to the amount of work we do tactically.
“The coaching staff do a lot of work to get us right so that everyone in the 22 man squad knows their roles and that gives us a lot of freedom going forward.”
