JOSH Kennedy's Japanese club Nagoya Grampus have missed out on a spot in the 2010 AFC Champions League after losing 4-1 to Gamba Osaka in the Emperor's Cup final.
Grampus would have claimed the fourth and final Japanese spot in next year's Champions League with victory in Tokyo, but Sanfrecce Hiroshima, who finished 4th in the J.League, enter the continental competition with winners Gamba already qualified via the league.
And Gamba, who won last year's Emperor's Cup, deserved to retain their title with slick football which was too much for Nagoya.
Gamba's Brazilian forward Lucas Severino opened the scoring on 6 minutes after some lovely work by Masato Yamazaki down the left flank.
But five minutes before the break, Nagoya responded with Socceroo Kennedy providing the assist.
Japanese international Keiji Tamada did well on the right to deliver a well-weighted cross for Kennedy, who had time to head the ball into the path of Naoshi Nakamura and he converted the chance.
Despite going into half-time with scores level, Nagoya were unable to make further inroads after the break and Gamba deservedly ran away with it in the second-half.
Kennedy did glance a header wide, before Osaka piled on 3 goals in the final quarter of an hour with Yasuhito Endo grabbing a double and Takahiro Futagawa getting the other.
Nagoya, who were AFC Champions League semi-finalists in 2009, miss the 2010 edition with Gamba and Hiroshima qualifying along with J.League champions Kashima Antlers and runners-up Kawasaki Frontale.
