Football Association of Malaysia deputy president Tengku Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah has stepped down in the wake of the national team's appalling performance at the AFC Asian Cup 2007.
Tengku Abdullah had held the position since 1992 but resigned from all of his FAM posts on Sunday, a day after Malaysia's 5-0 hammering at the hands of Uzbekistan in a Group C clash at Bukit Jalil National Stadium in Kuala Lumpur.
While no reason was given for his departure, it appears that fan anger, following a pair of heavy defeats for the Malaysian team at the Asian Cup, played a significant part.
The loss to the central Asians was the second defeat of the competition for the Asian Cup co-hosts, who went down 5-1 to China in their opener.
They became only the second side after United Arab Emirates to see their hopes of reaching the knockout stage dashed.
The Malaysians have only one game remaining in the competition, against group favourites Iran on Wednesday.
