Wanderers defender Jonathan Aspro says a successful tour of Japan has Western Sydney primed for a dynamite A-League campaign.
The Wanderers knocked off J2 League side JEF United 3-0 and defeated Kokushikan University SC 3-1 while on their pre-season trip to Japan.
With an FFA Cup quarter-final next week and the new A-League season less than a month away, Aspro believes the tour has done them a world of good.
“From a football perspective we got a lot of work done,” he told FourFourTwo.
“In terms of the games we had two really positive results. In terms of the football it was all positive, the group got a lot out of it. We connected really well, the team cohesion was definitely evident on the tour.
“Going away to Japan, especially where it was really humid and hot, we really got tested in the training sessions physically and in the games as well.
“So it was really good preparation for, not only next Wednesday, but also the season ahead as we know come December/January/Februry we’re going to be playing in similar conditions.”
Western Sydney’s roster has undergone a massive turnover in the off-season, arguably more than any other club. Fourteen players have departed and 10 new faces have arrived.
Apro said the new faces had settled in to the club's systems well.
“The new players that have come in have transitioned really well,” the centre back said.
“All of them have bought into what we’re trying to do at the club, our hard work and our discipline that we have shown at training, they’ve bought into that.
“And they’re all really good guys that have blended into the squad and help to add different elements to our squad which we’ve needed to build and improve. They’ve all been good.”
The Wanderers head to Victoria next week to take on Melbourne City in the FFA Cup quarter-finals. And while City have added some big names to their side of late, Aspro said Western Sydney would be ready for them.
“They’ve recruited really well,” the 20-year old admitted.
“They’ve got some high-profile players and a lot of players we’re going to have to look out for such as Fornaroli, Fitzgerald, Caceres. We’re going to have to look at for those but we know in ourselves we can overcome any challenge that they throw at us come Wednesday night.
“We played down their twice last year, I think we won one quite convincingly 3-0 and the other one was a narrow 3-2 loss. So we’re quite confident going down there.
“It’s a beautiful stadium, nice pitch, crowd’s always good there so we enjoy going down there.”
