Sources at Adelaide United have revealed that Aurelio Vidmar will sign at least one more defender for the next A-League season - but it won’t be Stephen Laybutt.
United did admit the former Socceroo Stephen Laybutt is an attractive target theoretically, but effectively quashed any possibility of the move. Media manager Dom Rinaldo told au.fourfourtwo.com this morning: “I spoke to Aurelio about it and apart from him saying that he’d be a good signing, he’s definitely not a player that we’re looking at.”
Recent media speculation has linked the 15-cap Socceroo to the club after negotiations with Queensland Roar broke down. Laybutt is keen to return to Australia after his contact expired with Gent at the end of the Belgian season.
Les Anastasiou and Milan Susak are the two players in the box seat to secure a contract with the club. Both defenders are currently on trial and have impressed team officials in both training and during the weekend’s 1-1 draw in the Pre-Season Cup match against Melbourne in Launceston.
Provided their good form continues, it is understood that at least one will earn a contract following this Friday’s match against Perth Glory at Hindmarsh Stadium.
“We’ve got 21 players already signed and I’d say one will get a nod after this Friday. There’s a chance they might both get [a contract], but I think the plan is to keep the final spot on the roster free,” said Rinaldo.
A-League clubs now have just two more weeks to finalise their squads. The FFA’s deadline for team registrations to be completed is July 31.
