The Socceroos may be underdogs going into the game’s showpiece event in Brazil but fans of the green and gold have clearly shown themselves to be world-beaters.

Ticket requests from Australia are the seventh highest at 88,082 after Brazil (4, 368, 029), USA (374, 065), Argentina (266,937), Germany (134,899), Chile (102, 288) and England (96, 780).

On a per capita basis it makes Aussie fans among the most avid across the globe. Japan (69,806), Colombia (55,379) and Canada (49,968) round out the top 10.

The Socceroos have already qualified for their third consecutive World Cup appearance and one thing Holger Osieck’s men won’t be missing as they enter the arena of battle is a warm welcome from the stands, with supporters showing every sign of turning out in numbers.

More than 6.1 million ticket requests have been received as at the end of the initial application period on Thursday. Just over 70 per cent of those were from the host country.

FIFA.com is reporting interest from 203 countries with the biggest demand coming for the opening match in Sao Paula, Brazil’s matches and the final in Maracana stadium.

According to the official website: "The most popular host cities were São Paulo, which will host the opening match on 12 June 2014, Rio de Janeiro and Curitiba.

"Great interest was also registered in the team-specific ticket series, with already qualified Argentina and the Netherlands being the most sought after in this category.

The website added: “As demand is greatly exceeding supply, FIFA will conduct an electronic random selection draw under notarial supervision for the various matches.

“During the initial part of the random selection draw, all ticket applications received from those applicants who qualify for priority access, as per the 2014 FIFA World Cup Bill – namely elderly persons, students and members of the Bolsa Familia –, will be drawn against the more than 300,000 category 4 tickets reserved.

"Subsequent steps in the draw will allocate the remaining category 4 tickets as well as the other tickets in all other categories."

Applicants will know by November 4 whether their request was successful, with notifications made by email or SMS.

FIFA.com stated the ticket sales process will reopen on November 5 until November 28 and will be allocated on a “first come, first served” basis and subject to availability. 

The 2014 FIFA World Cup takes place between June 12 and July 13.
