Roger Johnson's goal with virtually the last kick of the game salvaged a point for Cardiff at Hull.

Johnson stunned the home fans with a perfect left-footed shot after an absorbing game at the KC Stadium.

Steve McPhee had put the Tigers ahead before Steven Thompson equalised, but Richard Garcia's strike appeared to have won the game until Johnson's last-gasp intervention.

The match saw Cardiff's Kasper Schmeichel save a penalty from Dean Windass - but that was offset by a bad mistake which led to Garcia's goal.

Dave Jones' men lost 4-1 at Hull last season and were up against it once more when McPhee opened the scoring after three minutes.

The former Port Vale forward also played a significant hand in the build-up to the goal with a neat pass to Fraizer Campbell, who swept the ball across to Garcia on the right.

Garcia ploughed down the wing before sending over an angled low cross which was struck into the roof of the net by McPhee.

Hull's lead was fleeting, however, as Thompson, aided by some generous defending, equalised three minutes later.

The unmarked Gavin Rae cut inside and bisected Michael Turner and Wayne Brown with an intelligent through-ball from which Thompson side-footed home.

Jones must have been thrilled at his side's resilience under pressure and would have had further cause for satisfaction had it not been for Tigers keeper Boaz Myhill, who saved brilliantly off Thompson and Joe Ledley.

But with Cardiff looking dangerous whenever they counter-attacked, Hull were awarded a penalty when Darren Purse upended Campbell in the penalty box - only for Schmeichel to save the resulting spot kick.

Yet Hull still held the aces at the interval when Schmeichel's feeble punch from Damien Delaney's cross spooned to Garcia, who did the rest with a cute finish from 10 yards.

Cardiff's second-half attempt to rescue a point was let down by alarming profligacy - with Thompson the biggest culprit.

The Scotland international should have firstly directed his header off Paul Parry's corner away from Myhill, who nonetheless did excellently to tip the ball over for a corner.

Thompson's skewed effort wide of the target late on was also poor and the imposing forward was left grateful to Johnson, who guided the ball home from the edge of the penalty area.
