Walter Novellino's side were reduced to 10 men when Socceroo Vincenzo Grella was sent off for a second bookable offence moments before the half-time break.

Alessandro Rosina had earlier given Toro the lead with a 36th-minute penalty while Napoli missed the chance to equalise from the spot when Maurizio Domizzi failed to convert shortly after the interval.

However Marek Hamsik salvaged a point with a close-range finish in the 81st minute.

Napoli had begun the match brightly and almost opened the scoring in the seventh minute when a corner to the back post produced a scramble in the box before Granata defender Cesare Natali cleared off the line.

Torino responded and the influential Rosina saw his shot from 20 yards whistle past the post in the 11th minute.

Seven minutes later Rosina created a crossing opportunity for David Di Michele, who played the ball to strike partner Sasa Bjelanovic but the Croatian was unable to get a touch on the ball to direct it towards goal.

Edoardo Reja finally started to get into the game and twice tested Torino goalkeeper Matteo Sereni in three minutes.

First Walter Gargano's header from just inside the penalty area was parried by Sereni in the 27th minute then the former Ipswich Town custodian blocked a close-range attempt from Marcelo Zalayeta

Torino were handed a chance to open the scoring from the penalty spot in the 36th minute after Napoli defender Maurizio Domizzi blocked Bjelanovic's shot with his hand.

Rosina took the resulting spot-kick and confidently drilled the ball past Partenopei goalkeeper Gennaro Iezzo and into the right side of the net.

The visitors came close to undoing their first-half endeavour four minutes later when Natali's miss-hit backpass deceived Sereni but drifted just wide of the post.

Grella received his marching orders in the 43rd minute when the Australia international midfielder was shown a second yellow card by the referee.

Domizzi then almost made amends for his early mistake when he unleashed a powerful 25-yard drive a minute before half-time but Sereni made a superb diving save.

The second period was a much tighter affair as 10-man Torino put players behind the ball and Napoli were given a chance to equalise in the 48th minute when Sereni brought down Zalayeta in the penalty area.

Domizzi stepped up to take the kick but Sereni atoned for his mistake when he guessed correctly and dived to his left to save the shot.

The Torino defence repelled Napoli's attacking threat but they eventually caved in the 81st minute when Hamsik netted from inside the six-yard box after latching on to a knock down from Roberto Sosa.

Emanuele Calaio smashed a spectacular long-range against the woodwork in injury time but Torino held on to earn a well-deserved point.
