A TRIO of Australian referees have been appointed to the upcoming FIFA Confederations Cup which will be held in South Africa from June 14-28.
Matthew Breeze (NSW) along with assistant referees Matthew Cream (SA) and Ben Wilson (ACT) will be the Asian Football Confederation's match official representatives at the tournament.
For Matthew Breeze and Matthew Cream, this will be their second appearance at the Confederations Cup with the pair having officiated at the 2005 FIFA Confederations Cup in Germany which included their appointment for the 3rd/4th place play-off fixture between Germany and Mexico.
This will be Ben Wilson's first FIFA Confederations Cup, having previously officiated at the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany.
The appointment is another great achievement for Breeze who in February was named the Zurich Referee of the Year, as the top referee during the Hyundai A-League 2008/09 season.
"It's another great honour to be appointed to such a prestigious tournament as the FIFA Confederations Cup," said Breeze speaking from Dubai shortly after refereeing the AFC Champions League match between Al-Shabab Al-Arabi and Sepahan.
"It's also a great opportunity for Matt, Ben and myself to push for selection at next year's FIFA World Cup. We really enjoyed refereeing at the same tournament in 2005, and four years later we are more mature and better experienced referees which will definitely assist our performances."
