Australia kept a clean sheet throughout the qualification phase of the 2009 AFC U-16 Women’s Championships and have finished top of their group.

In their toughest match of the tournament, the Westfield U-16 Women operated well as a unit in the energy-sapping conditions in Kuala Lumpur.

The first half remained goalless despite Australia dominating with many attempts on goal and some quality defensive play.

Early in the second half, Tara Andrews and Samantha Kerr combined to deliver the ball to Emily van Egmond who sent home Australia’s first goal in the 49th minute.

The Australians successfully attacked again in the 89th minute. Top goal scorer, Catlin Foord’s shot was pushed-out by Thailand’s goal keeper and Andrews wasted no time with the deflection by hitting the back of the net.

“It was great to see the team finish top of their group,” said coach, Gary Phillips.

“This tournament has provided the players with good experience playing in Asia.

“It has been an opportunity for us to develop our playing structure and style and we look forward to next year’s Championships.”
