AUSSIES ABROAD: Socceroos Harry Kewell and Lucas Neill both played as Galatasaray lost 2-0 to Genclerbirligi in a nightmare last-ever game at the Ali Sami Yen in Turkey's Super Lig on the weekend.
It was a bitter farewell for the out-of-sorts Galatasaray at the iconic Ali Sami Yen, known in Turkey as 'Hell' for opposition teams, ahead of their move into its newly constructed Turk Telekom Arena next month.
It was especially a disappointing goodbye for Kewell, who was replaced at half-time as Cimbom slipped to their eighth defeat of the Super Lig campaign.
The Aussie pair started the game but it was Genclerbirligi, who were without injured Socceroo Mile Jedinak, who began the brighter with Hursut Meric putting them ahead inside the first minute.
Kewell worked hard to level terms for the hosts and had a penalty shout waved away when Ante Kulusic dived in on the Australian inside the box.
Moments later, Kewell worked a neat one-two with Baris Ozbek but he fired wide from the edge of the box.
On 37 minutes, Genclerbirligi doubled their advantage when Orhan Sam fired home.
Galatasaray responded by making two changes at the break as they chased the game, which saw Kewell replaced by Mehmet Batdal.
But it didn't provide the breakthrough for Galatasaray and boss Gheorghe Hagi hinted after the game that changes were needed at the club.
"This result is not worthy of Galatasaray," he said. "We will need a new team and a new football mentality for our new stadium."
