The 31-year-old, who stepped down from the Socceroos after the 2010 World Cup, had been out of action for Rovers for the past three months due to a long-term Achilles injury.

But Grella came off the bench on 70 minutes against Villa, although he couldn't prevent his side exiting the competition. It was only Grella's sixth appearance for Rovers this season.

For Villa, there was no Chris Herd in their matchday squad.

Elsewhere in the FA Cup, Aussie keeper Adam Federici played a full game helping Reading reach the last 16 with a 2-1 win at Stevenage Borough on Saturday.

In Italy's Serie A, Mark Bresciano was not in the Lazio squad which defeated Fiorentina 2-0 on Saturday.

In Italy's Serie B, Adrian Madaschi played a full 90 minutes as Portogruaro claimed a crucial 1-0 win at Carl Valeri's Sassuolo. Portogruaro are now 19th, while Sassuolo are 20th.

In Germany's Bundesliga, Mitchell Langerak was an unused substitute as Borussia Dortmund continued their title charge with a 3-0 win at VfL Wolfsburg on Saturday.

In Germany's 2.Bundesliga, Socceroos pair Dario Vidosic and Nikita Rukavytsya faced off as Hertha BSC won 3-1 at Arminia Bielefeld on Sunday.

Vidosic played a full game, while Rukavytsya started but was replaced after 74 minutes, as the German second tier leaders easily accounted for the league's bottom club.

In Greece's Super League, VIS product Apostolos Giannou was a 70th-minute substitute as Kavala drew 1-1 at Panionios on Sunday.

In Scotland's Premier League, Ryan McGowan was not in the Hearts squad which won 1-0 over St Johnstone on Saturday.

In Scotland's Division Two, on-loan Hearts defender Dylan McGowan put in a full shift for East Fife as they lost 4-3 at Livingston on Saturday.

In India's I-League, Tolgay Ozbey scored his ninth goal of the season as leaders East Bengal drew 2-2 with Churchill Brothers on Saturday.
