AUSSIES ABROAD: Scott McDonald's hat-trick was the highlight of the weekend but veteran Scott Chipperfield also scored to celebrate signing a new deal with Swiss champions FC Basel.
Chipperfield struck in Basel's important 2-1 win over Young Boys in Switzerland's Super League on Saturday, to celebrate signing a new deal which keeps him at St Jakob-Park until June 2012.
Young Boys had gone ahead on 21 minutes through Henri Bienvenu's deflected effort, but Chipperfield equalised five minutes later.
The former Socceroo levelled with a neat left-foot finish from Berang Safari's left-wing cross.
The goal was the 35-year-old veteran's eighth in all competitions this season.
And Chipperfield had more to celebrate late on as Alexander Frei scored an 85th-minute winner to end Basel's run of three consecutive draws and extend their league lead to four points from second-placed FC Zurich.
In England's Championship, Scott McDonald scored a spectacular first-half hat-trick in Middlesbrough's 4-2 win over Richard Garcia's Hull City on Saturday.
Middlesbrough had trailed early when Garcia headed for Jay Simpson to give the Tigers a third-minute lead, before McDonald struck back.
The Socceroo equalised on 11 minutes with a cool finish in a one-on-one situation, before putting Boro ahead two minutes later lashing in a loose ball inside the box after a Hull defensive error.
Julio Arca added a third for Boro on 26 minutes, before McDonald completed his hat-trick before the interval, expertly bringing down Barry Robson's cross before shooting in from close-range.
McDonald was replaced on 67 minutes with either cramp or a hamstring injury, as Hull pulled one back in the second-half but the damage was done. Garcia played a full game for the Tigers, while Rhys Williams was rested for Boro.
After the game, Boro boss Tony Mowbray praised McDonald, saying: "Whether he scores or not, Scott works his socks off for the football team. He's a centre-forward who I've asked to play slightly differently from the way he was used to playing with Celtic.
"He's having to work very much harder for the team and he's taken that on without any moaning and groaning. He obviously enjoys scoring goals and he'll have enjoyed that today."
