WITH a number of leagues still on their winter break, there was limited action across the globe for Socceroos hopefuls. In the English lower leagues, Bradden Inman continued his impressive return from exile with a goal for Crewe Alexandra, while combative midfielder James Wesolowski impressed for Oldham Athletic.
In the English Premier League, Mile Jedinak played a full game in midfield as Crystal Palace lost 2-0 to Tottenham Hotspur. Jedinak did have an opportunity late in the contest to find the back of the net but his header from a corner drifted wide of the target.
Mark Schwarzer was an unused substitute as Chelsea beat Hull City 2-0, while Brad Jones was absent from the match-day squad through illness as Liverpool beat Stoke City 5-3.
In the Championship, Rhys Williams played a full game in defence as Middlesbrough beat Blackpool 2-0.
Shane Lowry played a full game in defence as Millwall lost 1-0 to Huddersfield Town. Scott McDonald started and played 63 minutes in the clash and went close to opening the scoring in the first half, only to see his low drive clip the post.
Elsewhere, Adam Federici was an unused substitute as Reading beat Watford 1-0, while Alex Cisak was an unused substitute as Burnley beat Yeovil Town 2-1.
In League One, Bradden Inman found the back of the net for Crewe Alexandra in their 4-2 loss to Rotherham United. Inman opened the scoring on 10 minutes, reacting quickest to tap home after AJ Leitch-Smith’s shot came off the post.
James Wesolowski scored the winner for Oldham Athletic in their 1-0 win over Stevenage. Wesolowski scored the game’s only goal on 12 minutes, nodding home Michael Petrasso’s pinpoint cross.
Massimo Luongo played a full game in midfield as Swindon Town beat Peterborough United 2-1.
Bailey Wright played a full game in defence as Preston North End lost 2-0 to Wolverhampton. Neil Kilkenny played a full game in midfield for Preston.
Elsewhere, James Meredith was absent with a foot injury as Bradford City drew 1-1 with Bristol City.
In League Two, Ryan Williams played a full game as Oxford United played out a 0-0 draw with Portsmouth. Williams, who played on the right side of a front three, had several chances on goal but was unable to beat Pompey ‘keeper Trevor Carson.
Aaron Downes played a full game in defence as Torquay United beat AFC Wimbledon 2-0. Downes produced a remarkable goal-line clearance in the second half from George Francomb’s shot to preserve his side’s two goal cushion.
Ben McNamara was an unused substitute as Northampton Town lost 2-0 to York City.
Elsewhere, Shane Cansdell-Sherriff was absent with a broken cheekbone as Burton Albion beat Cheltenham 2-1.
In the Scottish Premier League, Dylan McGowan played a full game in defence as Hearts lost 1-0 to Motherwell.
In the Italian Serie A, Carl Valeri was an unused substitute as Sassuolo produced a stirring 4-3 win over AC Milan.
In the Greek Super League, Apostolos Giannou returned from injury, coming on in the 82nd minute as Panionios lost 1-0 to Panathinaikos.
In the Greek Third Division, Billy Konstantinidis continued his hot form with a goal in Panserraikos’ 2-0 win over Neo Agioneri.
In the Turkish Second Division, Kerem Bulut was absent from the match-day squad as Karsiyaka beat Sanliurfaspor.
In Qatar, Mark Bresciano remained out with his FIFA imposed suspension as Al Gharafa beat Al Ahli 5-4.
Elsewhere, Sasa Ognenovski was absent from the match-day squad as Umm Salal moved off the bottom of the table following a 4-0 thumping of Al Muaidar.
In Iran, Iain Fyfe was absent from the match-day squad as Mes Kerman lost 2-1 to Malavan FC.
