Basle took full advantage of FC Zurich's slip-up to move to within a point of the leaders at the top of the Swiss Super League on Saturday.
Mladen Petric fired Basle into a seventh-minute lead against Aarau at St Jakob-Park, before Yacine Hima saw red for the visitors following a second caution in the 82nd minute.
Daniel Majstorovic (90) then wrapped up the win to move his team onto 61 points, one behind the leaders, who could only manage a goalless draw at home to FC Thun.
The visitors are currently three places off the bottom of the table and the point edged them further away from danger.
Elsewhere on Saturday, Grasshoppers fired six past a hapless Lucerne to climb fourth in the table with a hat-trick coming from Goncalves Ailton.
The Brazilian scored after 39, 59 and 90 minutes to add to goals from Antonio Dos Santos (10) and a brace from Yassin Mikari (51 and 90), while the only goal for Lucerne came courtesy of a Jean-Michel Tchouga strike 11 minutes from time.
