EUROROO WRAP: Australian pair Craig Moore and Zeljko Kalac helped Kavala keep a clean sheet and hold giants Olympiakos to a 0-0 draw in the Greek Super League.
Second-placed Olympiakos had the best of the opportunites but Kavala's defence held firm with Kalac making several good saves.
But Kavala were lucky to retain eleven men on the pitch after a fifth minute incident involving Moore where he appeared to elbow Vasilis Torosidis. The Australian was fortunate to only receive a yellow card.
Olympiakos' first chance came when Kalac, who did have a good game, flapped at a first-half cross which allowed Matt Derbyshire an opportunity, but his header was wide and escorted out by Moore.
Just prior to the break, Derbyshire got in behind the Kavala defence firing in a shot which Kalac parried only for the Englishman to hit a follow-up which was agonisingly saved off the line.
Olympiakos poured the pressure on late, with Lomana LuaLua and Ieroklis Stoltidis having the best of the chances but Kalac was up to the task on both occasions.
Kavala, who were only promoted to the top flight this season, are up to seventh in the Super League.
Elsewhere overnight, Brett Emerton continued his return after a niggling groin injury, but struggled to get into the game and never got going, as Blackburn defeated Fulham 2-0 in England's Premier League.
Socceroos custodian Mark Schwarzer did play a full game for the Cottagers and was helpless for both goals. There was also still no Vince Grella for Blackburn.
In Italy's Serie A, Mark Bresciano was another Aussie back from a stint on the sidelines as he put in a full shift in Palermo's 0-0 draw at Napoli.
Bresciano was in and out of the match although he did have a good chance to score with a follow-up which was well saved after Fabrizio Miccoli's missed penalty on 22 minutes.
In Germany's Bundesliga, new FC Nurnberg boss Dieter Hecking overlooked Dario Vidosic, who wasn't in their squad, as they lost 1-0 to title challengers Schalke 04.
Vidosic has worryingly missed Nurnberg's last four fixtures.
In Holland's Eredivisie, David Carney was missing due to his shoulder problem as FC Twente's 12-match league winning streak came to an end with a 0-0 draw at FC Utrecht.
In Turkey's Kupasi, Harry Kewell wasn't involved as Galatasaray cruised past Denizli Belediye 5-1, with Michael Petkovic also missing as Sivasspor beat Giresunspor 4-3.
