Victory went down to City mid-week with a contentious goal from Luke Brattan and a strike from Connor Chapman. Club boss Kevin Muscat was fined $5000 for attacking the referee's performance after the game.

But Austin insists his side has already put the fiery semi-final defeat to bed.

"The most difficult part of that loss was that we had a chance to play in another FFA Cup final and lost that opportunity," he told FourFourTwo.

"We were pleased with aspects of the performance, but unfortunately things didn't go our way on the night.  We've moved on now, and will put all of our energy into the rest of the A-League season."

Victory have now lost two derbies with City so far this season, one in the A-League and one in the FFA Cup.

"It's always tough to lose games, no matter who the opponent is," Austin admits.

"The first derby was a disappointing performance from us. Nothing went right on the night, and they took advantage. Tuesday's game was a very even contest.  We created enough chances but just didn't capitalise, and they obviously made the most of their opportunities."

Austin swapped Central Coast for Victory in the off-season. The forward scored in round one against Brisbane Roar in his A-League debut for his new club.

"Personally it's always nice to start off the season on a positive note, especially given it was my first A-League game at a new club," he said.

"I was happy I could score the goal, but ultimately it was disappointing to concede a goal late and draw the match.  For me the most important thing is team success, and playing my role for the team."

Victory have notched a draw, a loss and a win so far after the first three rounds of the competition. Austin believes there is plenty of room for improvement for his team.

"We feel like we've played some good football in patches, but clearly there's plenty of room for improvement," the 25-year old said.

"We had a great pre-season and came in to Round 1 with confidence. We played well against Brisbane and felt like we deserved the three points, then we lowered our colours in the derby.

"The win against Adelaide was a great experience, with so many of our fans there and with Marco scoring that late winner. For us it's about trying to be consistent with our performances.  It's still very early in the season and there's plenty of football to be played."

Victory take on winless Wellington Phoenix on Monday at AAMI Park. The Kiwi outfit have yet to win a game or score a single game, but Austin said Victory won't be taking them for granted.

"We know Wellington is a much better team than their record suggests," the winger said.

"They have serious quality across the park and will be very difficult to beat.  We'll need to be on our game on the night, but we're confident if we stick to the way we want to play we can get the three points."
