Ange Postecoglou’s side needed to win the game by two or more goals to guarantee a place in the knockout stages, and that looked like a real possibility when James Troisi opened the scoring with a composed finish three minutes before half time.

The Socceroos performed admirably throughout the contest but were undone by Martín Rodríguez’s equaliser midway through the second half.

But which players stood out on the night? Here are our player ratings.

Australia

Mat Ryan 7.5 – Made a crucial save to deny Arturo Vidal when the game was still goalless. Could do little about the goal when he was left exposed.

Mark Milligan 7.5 - Occasionally exposed to the pacey Sanchez but overall the 31-year-old, who was moved into defence, rose to the challenge well. Kept the Arsenal star quiet for large spells.

Milligan's battle with Sanchez was a highlight

Trent Sainsbury 7.5 - Commanding defensive display in the middle of the back three. Won numerous aerial duels and read the game brilliantly before he was forced off with a hamstring injury on 70 minutes. Missed a golden opportunity to put Australia 2-0 up though.

Ryan McGowan 7 - Slotted into the side with little fuss and looked comfortable in the back three. Made some important interceptions and was comfortable on the ball. Carried on after a nasty clash of heads with Eduardo Vargas.

Massimo Luongo 7 - Full of energy in midfield and justified his selection after a poor showing against Germany. Still a few errant passes in the final third.

Jackson Irvine 8 - Dominated the midfield, constantly snapping into challenges and not allowing Chile’s players time on the ball. The Burton Albion man was efficient in possession and showed his versatility with a complete midfield display.

Luongo was vastly improved in midfield

Robbie Kruse 6.5 - Struggled early on but began to pin down Chile full back Eugenio Mena late in the first half. Switched to a midfield role after the break but tired towards the end.

Aziz Behich 5.5 - Didn’t cause Chile too many problems down the left and was outjumped by Vargas in the build-up to Chile’s equaliser. Never stopped running.

James Troisi 8 - Excellent display from the 28-year-old, who is currently without a club. Showed great vision on numerous occasions to pick out forward runs from his teammates. Took his goal superbly well, with a delicate dink over Claudio Bravo.

Tim Cahill 7 - Marshalled Australia’s midfield on his 100th cap. Audacious cross almost found Tomi Juric in the first half. Replaced by Mathew Leckie on 55 minutes. Had one sniff on goal with a trademark header.

Tomi Juric 6.5 - Worked hard without the ball as he led Australia’s effective pressing game from the front. Replaced by Jamie Maclaren on 62 minutes.

Troisi might have a few new suitors

Subs

Mathew Leckie 5.5 - Replaced Cahill in the second half but struggled to make an impact on the right flank. Used his pace well.

Jamie Maclaren 5 - Came on for Juric in the second half. Missed a great chance in the 73rd minute after he was setup by Troisi.

Bailey Wright - Came on late for the injured Sainsbury.

Claudio Bravo had his moments

Chile

Claudio Bravo 5.5 - Went to ground early as he was beaten by Troisi for the opener. Had a couple of comfortable saves to make after that.

Mauricio Isla 6 - Wasn’t tested too much defensively but struggled to break forward from right back.

Paulo Diaz 6.5 - Made a number of important blocks and interceptions to keep Australia at bay. Missed a decent chance when he headed wide from Vidal’s delivery.

Gonzalo Jara 5.5 - Wasteful in possession, regularly giving the ball away when under pressure from Australia’s forward line.

Arturo Vidal was busy throughout

Eugenio Mena 6.5 - Began to get forward more in the second half. Cross from the left resulted in Chile’s equaliser.

Francisco Silva 6 - Tried to drop deep to receive the ball from his defenders. Often found himself shackled by Australia’s midfielders when he ventured further forward.

Charles Aranguiz 5.5 - Replaced at half time by Pablo Hernández. Made a couple of effective cross-field passes but was quite ineffective overall.

Arturo Vidal 7 - The box-to-box midfielder was in the thick of the action throughout and could have been on the scoresheet if it wasn’t for a great save from Ryan.

Jose Fuenzalida 5.5 - Also withdrawn at the break, for the livelier Martín Rodríguez, after struggling to make an impact on the right.

Alexis Sanchez 6.5 - Not his best game but still looked like Chile’s best route to goal, consistently dropping deep to try and influence the match.

Eduardo Vargas 6.5 - The pacey forward was always on the move but overall Australia dealt with him pretty well. Beat Behich in the air to setup Chile’s equaliser.

Rodriguez came off the bench to equalise

Subs

Pablo Hernández 5.5 - Came on for Aranguiz at the interval but was generally outfought and outnumbered in midfield.

Martín Rodríguez 7 - Gave his side a much-needed boost after coming on at half time. The 22-year-old stayed calm in front of goal to equalise from Vargas’ knockdown.

Marcelo Díaz – Replaced Vargas with eight minutes to go. Not enough time to give a fair rating.
