AUSTRALIA has lodged a protest with the Asian Football Confederation following concerns Syria has fielded overage players in the U19 Championship being held in the UAE.
The AFC launched an investigation into complaints by both Saudi Arabia and Australia following their matches with the team from the war-torn nation.
The Young Socceroos currently sit equal on points with Syria in group D but second on goal difference after Syria thrashed Saudi Arabia 5-1 in their opening game of the tournament.
The Young Socceroos drew 1-1 draw with Syria on Tuesday and lodged the protest after the match in accordance with regulations. Qatar is yet to get off the mark and was due to play Syria tonight.
FFA told au.fourfourtwo.com: “We share Saudi Arabia’s concerns and have raised this with the AFC who we understand is looking into the matter.
“For formal purposes, we have lodged a protest in accordance with the regulations. We should now await the outcome of the AFC’s process and whilst this is in train it would not be appropriate for us to comment any further.”
Syria faces expulsion from the tournament with its points forfeited to the opposing teams if the complaints are found proven by the AFC disciplinary committee.
The nation suffered the same fate two years ago when, along with Yemen, MRI tests concluded that both teams were fielding overage players in the U16 championship.
The Young Socceroos play Saudi Arabia later tonight and are on track to meet either Uzbekistan or DPR Korea in the quarter finals.
