The EAFF Executive Committee (ExCo) met recently and discussed the possibility of the Socceroos participating in the triennial event, which was won by China PR in 2010.

EAFF ExCo members have welcomed the proposal, which could include Australia's men's and women's teams, as it would add to the "competitiveness and promotional aspects" of the tournament.

An EAFF statement from the meeting also read: "This (proposal) would increase and upgrade its value and authorities of EAFF East Asian Cup from long term point of view."

The statement continued: "ExCo members agreed to study and review in advance in depth through relevant standing committee such as competition, marketing and financial committees.

"The final decision of Australia’s participation will be decided by EAFF EXCO members in consultation with relevant standing committees of EAFF."

The 2013 event would be the fifth edition of the regional tournament which includes Japan, South Korea and China PR.

The EAFF, which was formed in 2002, has seen China PR and South Korea both win the tournament twice, while Japan are three-time runners-up.

The likes of North Korea, Hong Kong, Guam, Chinese Taipei, Macau and Northern Mariana Islands must all qualify for the final tournament through preliminary competitions.

The women's EAFF Asian Cup has been played three times with current World champions Japan two-time winners, while South Korea has lifted the trophy once. The 2013 women's East Asian Cup will be hosted by Guam and China.
