These messages were clear in speeches from former Socceroo, Aboriginal star of the 1974 World Cup team Harry Williams.

And the newly crowned Australian footballer of the year Mark Schwarzer was quick to draw these themes together when he spoke at the launch.

"Our ancient traditional culture which [Aboriginal Socceroo] Harry Williams spoke of is built on these dreams," said the Socceroo shotstopper.

"And our country was developed on the back of generations of migrants and refugees who also had dreams, like my parents. Dreams for themselves and dreams that built a nation.

"The FIFA World Cup in Australia would be bigger than anything we've ever seen before."

He added: "It is truly the greatest show on earth."

Schwarzer added later that he never thought he'd say the day when Australia would formally bid for the world's biggest sporting event.

"So join us over the next 18 months," he said.
