Paolo Guerrero got the other goal after the break in a 2-0 victory, which left Bert van Marwijk's side with just one point from three games.

In the end, even a win wouldn't have been enough to go through following France's draw with Denmark.

Even so, this was a disappointing way to bow out of the competition which at one stage promised so much.

Here are our player ratings.

Australia

Mat Ryan 5

Was unsighted for the first goal while the second took a deflection of Mark Milligan. Didn't have much to do other than pick the ball out of the net.

Josh Risdon 5

Struggled to get forward from right-back and left chasing shadows for Peru's second goal, which was created down Risdon's flank.

Mark Milligan 5

Got in the way of Ryan for Peru's first goal and was turned by Guerrero for the second goal.

Trent Sainsbury 5

Allowed Guerrero to run in behind him and set up Carrillo for the opener.

Aziz Behich 6

Made a few forays forward in the first half and delivered some threatening crosses. Like the rest of the team, his energy levels significantly diminished in the second half.

Mile Jedinak 5

Battled away in the middle of the park but stuggled to nulify the lively Christian Cueva.

Aaron Mooy 7

Played some probing forward passes and set-plays which weren't converted by his team-mates.

Robbir Kruse 5

Neat cutback almost set up Matthew Leckie in the first half. Apart from that he struggled to make an impact.

Matthew Leckie 6

A willing runner who got into some decent attacking positions. Wasn't able to apply the finishing touches though.

Tom Rogic 6.5

Australia's best attacking threat in the first half, causing problems with the ball at his feet in front of Peru's back four. Struggled to find space after the break.

Tomi Juric 5

Some good hold-up play early on but soon faded and was replaced on 52 minutes.

Subs

Tim Cahill 5

Replaced Juric but Australia weren't the same in the second half.

Daniel Arzani 5.5

Didn't lack confidence and tried his luck with a long-range effort. It was too little too late though.

Jackson Irvine 5

Came on with 18 minutes to go when Peru looked comfortable.

Peru

Pedro Gallese 6

Decent save to deny Matthew Leckie in the first half but was rarely tested after that.

Luis Advincula 7

Solid at the back and provided a good outlet going forward from right-back.

Christian Ramos 7

Strong, improsing figure who won the majority of his aerial duels.

Anderson Santamaria 7.5

Read the game well and positioned himself to thwart Australia's attacks in the first half.

Miguel Trauco 6

Dealt well with Leckie's energy at left-back.

Yoshimar Yotun 6

Played a lovey forward pass for Peru's opener but was quite quiet for the majority of the first half. Replaced at half time.

Renato Tapia 6

Spent most of his time protecting the back four as Peru withstood Australia's early pressure.

Edison Flores 6

Switched flanks with Carrillo but dipped in and out of the game. Hit the post late on.

Andre Carrillo 8

Stunning strike gave Peru a foothold in the game. His pace relieved pressure when Peru were under the cosh.

Christian Cueva 8

Buzzed around the Australia penalty area and caused plenty of problems with and without the ball.

Paolo Guerrero 7.5

Made selfless runs in behind Australia's defence and was rewarded when his shot deflected off Milligan to double Peru's lead.

Subs

Pedro Aquino 6

Came on at half-time to solidify Peru's advantage.

Paolo Hurtado 5.5

Introduced in the final half an hour as Peru coasted to the win
