The 'Aussie Supporteroos' claimed some silverware at the Fan World Cup which was played in St Petersburg alongside the FIFA version.

The Fan World Cup is a new concept where supporters from 16 nations competed.

As per usual, Australia was drawn in the 'group of death' alongside Algeria and Cyprus who finished second and third respectively. Host nation Russia triumphed.

Australia ultimately finished 12th but claimed the trophy for being the 'Superfans' due to their all-round spirit and attitude.

The Supporteroos are not aligned with any tour company or group but instead were made up of fans from five states with the team put together on Facebook based on expressions of interest.

Matthew Dawson, who was part of the Supporteroos, told FourFourTwo: "The tournament was a great opportunity to have a run on the park and enjoy the great sport of football during our Russia adventure.

"The atmosphere throughout the tournament was incredible with opening and closing ceremonies featuring drummers and acrobatic displays and all the games being played in a great spirit between fans who ventured from across the globe."

The Australians also played Socceroos' World Cup foes France, Peru and Denmark in friendlies in the lead-up the tournament.

The Supporteroos went one better than the Socceroos, beating both France and Peru, although the results didn't count towards the tournament proper.

"Big thanks to Petr Kuzmin from Melbourne who organised the Australian team as well as friendlies between the Aussie team and France, Denmark and Peru throughout the World Cup," Dawson said.

The team are now planning on making tournaments like this regular occurrences at all World Cups, Asian Cups and qualifiers when the Socceroos play abroad.
