The 19-year-old was released by the Amsterdam outfit after allegedly stealing money from team-mate Edgar Manucharyan, although his representative Louis Laros claims Wormgoor was recovering a debt owed to him by the forward following a game of cards.

Laros said in a statement via the Dutch players' union: "In the media, Wormgoor has been portrayed as a common pick-pocket. But there is more to the story than that.

"Let me make myself clear: the action of Vito is wrong. He regrets it enormously and he finds it stupid that he handled it like he did.

"It is a law that you pay your debts, but there is of course also a law which states that you keep your hands off the property of others.

"That is why the contract was terminated - a terrible but inevitable outcome."

Laros insists his client is now keen to put the matter behind him and prove his ability on the field.

"Vito is determined to show at another club what kind of guy he is and how talented he is as a player," he added.
