The horror conditions caused headlines when screws and broken shards of plastic were found on the Spotless turf right before Western Sydney's clash against Newcastle.

It was a new experience for Baumjohann, the attacking midfielder who has spent most of his career with the biggest clubs in Germany.

"This was very strange," he said. "I never heard about this, that there can be a football game on a pitch where there was an event one week before.

"It's hard to play on pitches like this. That's no excuse for the result, because Newcastle also had to play on the same pitch.

"But I think for a football player, it's really hard to play on these kind of pitches. We are just hoping that the pitch at Spotless will be better next week Friday when we play against Central Coast Mariners."

Wanderers take on Melbourne Victory on Saturday at AAMI Park.

Victory are sitting in second spot on the ladder while Western Sydney have won just one game in the first five rounds.

But Baumjohann is looking forward to the challenge.

"They have a lot of good players and a lot of quality and they also struggled a little bit at the beginning of the season," the 31-year-old said.

"But now you can see they are also getting better week by week and it will be a tough game. But I think for us, to play against one of the best teams in the league in a nice stadium – I hope the pitch will be good – I think it will be a lot of fun.

"The whole team is very excited to play on Saturday."
