The 25-year-old spent the second half of last season on loan at Bavarian rivals Nurnberg after failing to break into Van Gaal's team, but he has ruled out a similar loan spell or permanent move away from the club this summer.

Instead, he wants to prove he is good enough to make the grade with Bayern.

"I can rule out a return to Nurnberg at the present time," he told the Bild newspaper.

"I still have one year on my contract in Munich and I want to make the breakthrough.

"That is my challenge as a footballer. I know how to deal with the difficult situation in Munich - I have learnt that over the years.

"Therefore, I am ready to fight for my place."

Ottl is not the only player looking to make an impression on Van Gaal this pre-season.

Last year's third-choice goalkeeper Thomas Kraft has suddenly found himself as the number one choice in pre-season training since Michael Rensing has left the club and Hans-Jorg Butt is currently on international duty with Germany.

Given the precedents set by Thomas Muller and Holger Badstuber last summer, when they emerged from the youth team to become regular first-teamers, Kraft is ready to stake his claim for a place among the pros.

"Of course I am only number one until Butti is back, but I am certainly going to give it my best shot," said the 21-year-old.

"I am really desperate to make my first appearance in the Bundesliga and it would be great to do that this season.

"Butti plans to retire in 2011, therefore it is going to be a really important year for me.

"I want to use it to recommend myself as the new number one because otherwise there is going to be the discussion of whether Kraft can do it or if a new goalkeeper needs to be signed."
