The Argentinian appears intent on a move away from the German champions this summer after being told by coach Louis van Gaal that he is no longer first choice at the heart of the defence.

He requested not to be included in the matchday squad for the Bundesliga opener against Wolfsburg at the weekend after learning that he would not be in the starting XI and he now looks set to leave with reports of interest from Spanish clubs Atletico Madrid and Sevilla.

According to Beckenbauer, it would not be such a great loss were the 29-year-old to leave.

"He has very often contributed to things not going too well for us in the past," said the Kaiser on Sky television.

"My word, there have been plenty of errors from him in recent years.

"He is an excellent player, but he just wants to play in the centre of the defence because then he does not have to do much running."

Bayern director of sport Christian Nerlinger will hold talks with the unsettled defender in the next few days to try and find a solution, but his time with Bayern appears to be nearing its end.

Van Gaal has put his faith in Daniel van Buyten and Holger Badstuber at the centre of his defence.
