“I don't remember it! I was hoping you wouldn't remind of that game,” smiled Beckham at the first offical press conference for the game.

“Obviously be it cricket, rugby or now football, Australia and England have a great rivalry.

“We wanted to win that night – whenever you put on the England jersey you want to win.”

Asked whether beating Sydney would provide a measure of payback for the 3-1 win by Australia at Upton Park in London, Beckham thought for a second and said: “Mmm, yeah. We also want to do well for the new manager.”

Sitting next to Beckham at the press call was Sydney FC captain Tony Popovic – who scored the first goal on that night.

“It was a special night,” recalled Popa. “It's always good to beat the Poms.”

The English superstar added that he'd recovered physically and mentally from the huge disappointment of England's crushing loss to Croatia last Wednesday night – a result that knocked England out of qualification for Euro 2008.

“Fortunately, I'm not the one who has to pick the new England manager. It's a high pressure job,” he added.

Beckham hoped that on Wednesday he hoped to see some of the sights of Sydney. He also has an appearance at a city department store on 11.30 that day to promote his new fragrance.

“I've never been here before," he revealed. "To get the chance just to walk around a bit would be nice.”
