Left back Aziz Behich has urged fans to come out and support the national team against Brazil at the MCG next week before the Socceroos jet off to the Confederations Cup in Russia.
Victoria’s Minister for Sport John Eren said about 50,000 people will attend Tuesday night’s clash.
Behich, who has lined up for both of Melbourne’s A-League clubs in the past, has never played at the iconic venue.
And despite being a friendly, the Bursaspor man feels more fans should turn out to see the Aussies take on some of the best players in the world.
“Fifty thousand is a big amount, but we would like more, it’s a big game, Brazil’s in town,” Behich said on Saturday.
“We’re just about to head off to Russia and we’re playing at the MCG - 50,000 is a good number, but the bigger the better.
“I was born and raised in Melbourne, so it’s exciting playing at probably the biggest stadium in Australia and in front of friends and family.
“Hopefully we can put on a good show for the supporters and get a good result.”
Behich came off the bench in Thursday night’s crucial 3-2 win over Saudi Arabia in Adelaide and the reactions to his impact have been overwhelmingly positive.
Coming off a strong season in Turkey, where he missed only two Super Lig games, the defender was excited to feature in his second Socceroos game in two years since playing against Kyrgyzstan.
“We started off the season well but I came into camp late because we had a relegation battle towards the end which we survived,” he said.
“Overall, it was a good season on a personal level. For the club, we’re expected to be in the top five normally, but we survived in the league which was the most important thing.
“Every game’s special when you get the chance to play for your national team. I think it’s the pinnacle of football for a footballer and you’ve just got to enjoy the time you’re in camp and you’re out on the training park.
“If I get called upon, of course I’ll be raring to go, and playing in Melbourne, being a Melbourne boy, it’s special also. But playing for your national team is something you dream of as a little kid and we’ve all got the chance to do it.”
