BEIJING Gouan coach Lee Jang-soo has blasted the condition of the field at EnergyAustralia Stadium and has registered a complaint to the Asian Football Confederation Match Commissioner to have tomorrow night's ACL match postponed or moved.
Beijing and Newcastle are set to play out a crucial match day five fixture in the Asian Champions League on Wednesday night in Newcastle but the condition of the pitch is creating havoc even before a ball has been kicked.
The field was in a sorry state after the Newcastle Knights hosted a torrid NRL match in rainy conditions against Brisbane last weekend and bucketing rain over the past three days in the New South Wales coastal city has aggravated the wear on the surface.
The Beijing coach and officials inspected the ground on Tuesday and complained immediately to the match commissioner about concern over injury to their players.
"We have come here today to confirm the condition of the field and after our confirmation we think that the condition of the field is not so good and is not suitable for such an important match," Jang-soo told the media at a press conference today.
"We have already talked with the match commissioner about our opinion and we know that from the beginning of this year the Asian Football Confederation have taken a lot of energy to stimulate football in Asia and we cannot continue to grow Asian football with these kinds of conditions."
Jang-soo said he had not received a reply from the match commissioner but said his team was ready to play if the game was to proceed.
"As professional players and coaches we prepare ever game to win and during the match every player will give their best performance," he said.
"But I think you can see with your own eyes and I don't think it is something special I have reason to see why this pitch is not suitable to play a game on."
Newcastle coach Gary van Egmond agreed the pitch was not fantastic but brushed off concerns the match would be moved or postponed.
"It is going to be wet and it is going to be bumpy but both teams have to deal with it so let's get it on," he said.
Jang-soo also defended the decision to leave seven of the regular team members back in China for this crucial ACL match.
"First thing I would like to say we have played and intensive campaign in China in the last few weeks," he said.
"Just before we came to Newcastle we played a Chinese Super League match and then flew 21 hours to get here and then we go back straight after the game for an even longer flight because we have to play another Chinese Super League match away from home.
"But even though we have seven players not playing from last weekend's match this is not the second team - they are all part of the Beijing squad and are all equally important, so we will have a very strong team."
