Berger has more than 35 years' experience as a head coach and technical director, including 637 matches in the Dutch Eredivise with FC Utrecht, FC Groningen, Fortuna Sittard and Sparta Rotterdam.

He holds the record as the youngest head coach in the Eredivise, having been appointed to the position at FC Utrecht as a 25-year-old. Berger is also a former head coach of J-League club Oita Trinita.

Prior to joining FFA in 2008, Berger acted as director of youth teams at the Royal Netherlands Football Association (KNVB), head coach of the Dutch Olympic team and technical director of De Graafschap.

Former Adelaide United head coach Aurelio Vidmar will make his debut as assistant coach to the Socceroos on Wednesday, having been appointed to the post in June.

Berger will name his squad for the friendly fixture later today. The match will be the first since Pim Verbeek stepped down following the World Cup in South Africa.

No successor appears close to being signed to replace Verbeek, prompting the need for Berger to step in to take charge for the match, one of the few warm-up games before January's Asian Cup campaign.
