VPL Wrap: Heidelberg United continued on their hot run of form, but it was a seven-goal thriller between two of the league’s top teams that stole the limelight in round 12.
Heidelberg United 5 (Osagie Ederaro (2), Hamlet Armenian, Evan Christodoulou, Matthew Tancevski)
Victorian Training Centre 0
@ Olympic Park (Village)
HEIDELBERG United extended their winning run to five games with a comprehensive 5-0 thrashing of Victorian Training Centre.
The Bergers are a genuine title threat after scoring 19 goals in three games without a blemish, handing VTC yet another belting.
It took 42 minutes to find the opener through Hamlet Armenian but the floodgates opened in the second half.
In-form attacker Osagie Ederaro started the romp on the hour mark and he sealed the win nine minutes from the end with Evan Christodoulou and Matthew Tancevski finding the net in between his brace.
Green Gully Cavaliers 3 (Hamid Basma, Mile Medjedovic, Mathew Sanders)
South Melbourne 2 (Fernando de Moraes (2))
@ Green Gully Reserve
GREEN Gully maintained the pressure on the top five with a 3-2 win over South Melbourne.
The Cavaliers were forced to work hard for the three points, relying on a 77th-minute winner from substitute striker Mathew Sanders.
They twice held the lead thanks to goals from Hamid Basma and Mile Medjedovic, but South attacker Fernando de Moraes pulled it back, both times from the penalty spot.
But Sanders vitally popped up to put the champions within four points of the top five.
Northcote City 3 (Trent Rixon (2), Nicholas Curtis)
Oakleigh Cannons 4 (Own goal, Ricky Diaco, Ante Cicak, Dane Milovanovic)
@ John Cain Memorial Park
OAKLEIGH Cannons kept hold of top spot with a thrilling 4-3 win over Northcote City.
Dane Milovanovic scored a 92nd-minute winner after a titanic battle.
City went 2-0 up in the first half thanks to a brace from striker Trent Rixon, only for the Cannons to pull one back on the stroke of half time.
Within five second-half minutes, they were in the lead as Ricky Diaco and Ante Cicak found the net.
Rixon found himself with the chance to equalise from the penalty spot but goal-keeper Peter Zois produced a strong save.
City did get back on level terms on 71 minutes when Nicholas Curtis scrambled home.
But Milovanovic found the winner against a Northcote side that finished the match with 10 men after Samuel Torrens was red-carded.

Springvale White Eagles 1 (Milos Lujic)
Bentleigh Greens 1 (Ryan Davidson)
@ White Eagles Stadium
SPRINGVALE White Eagles were not far away from an all-important second win of the season but eventually settled for a 1-1 draw against Bentleigh.
Striker Milos Lujic had given the White Eagles a first-half lead, only to be pegged back by Ryan Davidson on 56 minutes.
The draw keeps Springvale in the relegation zone, although they have closed the gap on Melbourne Knights to two points, with Bentleigh slipped to eighth.
Hume City 4 (Richard Cardozo (2), Fabio Dilizia, Atilla Ofli)
St Albans Saints 1 (Daniel Visevic)
@ Broadmeadows Valley Park
HUME City moved back into the top five with a comfortable 4-1 win over the St Albans Saints.
A brace from Richard Cardozo gave City a win they would have expected to get against the competition’s only winless side.
The Saints were ahead in the 10th minute as attacker Daniel Visevic scored his first goal for the club when he squeezed home a penalty.
But in four first-half minutes City were ahead as full-back Fabio Dilizia and Cardozo both headed home.
They were largely untroubled in the second half as attacker Atilla Ofli made it three on 66 minutes before assisting Cardozo in stoppage time to make it 4-1.
The Saints will be looking to strengthen their squad during the transfer window while City again look a finals threat.
Heidelberg United 3 (Evan Christodoulou, Saso Alexovski, Osagie Ederaro)
Richmond 1 (Michael Catalano)
@ Olympic Park (Village)
HEIDELBERG United’s in-form attacking trio were on the scoresheet again as they made it six wins in a row with a come-from-behind 3-1 win over Richmond.
Evan Christodoulou, Saso Alexovski and Osagie Ederaro all found the back of the net in United’s strong win.
Richmond attacker Michael Catalano had given the Eagles a lead inside the first minute but Christodoulou and Alexovski struck to have the hosts up after 11 minutes.
Ederaro completed the scoring five minutes from the end as he moved back atop the scoring charts.
