Sydney FC goal scoring hero Bernie Ibini says he’s not far away from being back to his best.
Bernie Ibini’s goal for Sydney FC against second placed Melbourne Victory last weekend allowed the Sky Blues to extend their lead at the top of the A-League ladder to 11 points.
In scoring the winner in Sydney's 2-1 comeback victory Ibini showed that he is well and truly over the horrific leg injury that kept him out of the game for over 12 months of his career.
The powerful forward’s explosiveness and creativity allowed him to create the space he needed to score the goal with a composed finish. The moment was a snapshot of the skill that earnt Ibini two Australian national team caps and a contract with Belgium side Club Brugge in 2015.
Reflecting on that goal the one-time Socceroo feels he is not far away from producing on-field displays like that more consistently.
“Being out for so long it’s always going to be the case that it was going to take time for me to be at my best,” he said. “Obviously I was very happy, whenever you score a goal as an attacking player it’s always a great feeling. Some of the other games when I scored some of my other goals I did pretty well to create those goals as well.
“It’s just about playing more minutes and continuously throughout the season just getting back to my best.”
Since his comeback Ibini has played 11 games and scored four goals in all competitions and the winger disagreed his performance against Victory signified a complete return to football.
“I wouldn’t say so,” he said. “I’ve felt good since I made my comeback in the FFA Cup. I’ve slowly kept working and getting minutes. I wouldn’t say that was my comeback. I have moved on from my injury and I’ve been training every week and been involved with games so I feel I’m already past that.”
Ahead of Sydney’s game against Brisbane Ibini was philosophical about playing from the start and pointed to the Sky Blues unbeaten 17 game streak.
“I’ve just got to keep training and keep working hard, he said. Then it’s obviously down to the coaching staff who they want to pick. We are undefeated this season so you can’t really say too much, the boys are doing very well and that’s all that matters.
“I just want to come on and do well again and whether that is scoring or setting up I just want to be playing well again.”
