The 24-year-old made 38 appearances in all competitions last term, providing essential back-up to Ashley Cole as the London club competed on multiple fronts, playing more than 60 games across the season.

However, the England international has started just 20 Premier League games in seven years at Stamford Bridge and is hoping to impress Jose Mourinho in order to secure a regular place.

Bertrand was heavily involved in the London club's pre-season tours of Asia and the United States, and is hoping that will be replicated over the coming campaign.

Chelsea will round off their pre-season fixtures against Roma on Saturday, with Bertrand desperate to be involved once again.

"It's been a good pre-season for me and I'm pleased to have been involved as much as I have," he told the club's official website.

"Hopefully I can increase that playing time (on Saturday) which will put me in good stead for the start of the season.

"It's important to have competition for places and it brings the best out in the team. With any top-class side you need to have that in every position.

"I've been waiting for the Premier League to start for a while because there's nothing more satisfying than knowing you've got three points after winning a tough game."

Chelsea have won all but one of their pre-season games, the one defeat coming to Real Madrid in the International Champions Cup final, with their Premier League campaign beginning at home to Hull City on August 18.
