Melbourne Victory striker Besart Berisha feels penalty shootouts come down to luck as his team fell 4-2 in the shootout to Sydney FC after a 1-1 deadlock on two hours.
Victory are left to wonder what might have been.
Berisha opened the scoring in the 20th minute but the visitors squandered the lead with 21 minutes remaining.
Alex Wilkinson missed the first penalty and it looked like it would be Victory’s night but captain Carl Valeri hit the crossbar and Marco Rojas’ low shot was saved by Danny Vukovic.
Vukovic revealed after the game his goalkeeping coach John Crawley studied Rojas’ penalties and it was ultimately left for Milos Ninkovic to seal the title and he did.
Berisha was on the list to take a penalty but his chance didn’t arrive. He urged there should be no blame attached to Rojas as Sydney simply had more luck on their side to win the shootout.
“Penalties are very hard and difficult, especially when you’re playing away, all the supporters are booing you and it’s not easy for each player,” Berisha said.
“In the end you have to be a bit lucky and in the end Sydney was luckier in the penalties and they won.
“You don’t need to stress, he (Rojas) should be proud, we all should be proud.
“The way we approached the game and played. We can’t criticise anybody, I missed so many penalties in my career.
“What are you going to do? That’s the way we approached the game, the way we play, we were brave for the whole game.”
Berisha also said their hard work does not end as they look to compete in the AFC Asian Champions League next season.
“Since day one I came here, we want to push every year to be No.1, to be the best club in this country,” he said.
“We’re going to drive, work hard. We have the club, supporters and players to do that and this is what we’re going to do, we’re going to start new, fresh for success.”
