The best and worst from Newcastle Jets' 6-1 thumping of Brisbane Roar at Suncorp Stadium.
Brisbane Roar hosted Newcastle Jets at Suncorp Stadium, which was seen as a dead rubber - albeit for the retiring 36-year-old, Matt McKay who has amassed 271 games for his beloved Roar.
Asian Cup winner and two- time title winner, his is a glittering career coming to an end, with just one more game to go against Adelaide United next week.
BEST
Did the Jets get the memo?
If this match was supposed to be about McKay, Newcastle Jets stole the show and didn’t read the memo.
They settled the quickest, finding a huge amount of space and width on both on the left and right-hand side with ease. While Brisbane had to concentrate on Dimi Petratos who looked lively, dangerous and showed fantastic close ball control, the warning signs were there for Roar to handle Jets attacking third.
Joe Champness brought heartache when the home side turned to see that he was threatening from the left side, while Roar were concentrating about the right-hand side
The Jets were able to cross the ball at will and he striked the ball so sweetly, quickly giving the away side a well deserved lead on the 23rd minute.
But the Jets weren’t finished there, with an assist from Champness, Roy O’Donovan dutifully tapped the ball in from close range, neatly into the bottom left-hand side of the post, leaving Young struggling to get down.
2-0 at half-time, what could the Roar do to turn things around?
Brisbane did come out after the break with Zach Duncan's first goal in the A-League, the young chargers attacking with pace and purpose.
They had 10 minutes to exhibit a brilliant display of football from their young guns and pulled one back to make it 2-1. But was this the Roar’s resurgence?
WORST
Brisbane's inconsistency
Darren Davies' men appear to do all the right things…sometimes. But they inevitably let themselves down by being sloppy when it matters.
Not pressing when they should, wayward passing of the ball, tackling when all they need to do is jockey their opponent...we could go on.
They looked terribly off the pace and out-matched from basically every position on the park tonight, as the Jets ran riot with ease and purpose. The only positive I can see is that they have 12 players who will be out of contract at the end of the season so a mass cleanout will be required!
I can’t blame the Roar coach for receiving a yellow card, he did cut a frustrated figure on the sidelines. For the record I thought Eli Babalj's first Roar goal should have stood on-side. Little consolation though...
Is there a mercy rule in football?
The goals were streaming in for Ernie Merrick's men.
A fantastic cross by Ivan Vujica saw O’Donovan coolly header the ball back behind the diving Young.
To make it 4-1 Kaine Sheppard goal's came courtesy of Dimi Petratos. On the 65th minute to make it 5-1, Champness sealed his brace after a simple tap in from another Petratos cross.
92nd minute, Kwabena Appiah, 6-1. Enough said.
