Roberts wishes the season would never end after hitting a blistering run of form.

Even though he got a helping hand for the first following a mistake by goalkeeper Scott Carson, Roberts has been immense after recovering from a broken foot.

He has kicked on after getting his first goal for the club following his move from Wigan in the summer in the FA Cup semi-final defeat by Chelsea.

Roberts said: "It has been hard work coming back from injury and getting to the level you want to be at.

"But I've got there now and I feel really good about my game. I wish it was earlier in the season.

"It has been frustrating but I'll continue to work hard and show what I can do from now until the end of the season.

"I just want to grab this chance with both hands and give everything I've got for the next three games."

Blackburn made the breakthrough after 60 minutes when Carson allowed a shot from Roberts to slip under his body.

Charlton suffered another setback three minutes later when Ben Thatcher was sent off after collecting his second yellow card of the game, both coming for lunges on David Bentley.

However, they equalised after 71 minutes when Darren Bent scored his 12th league goal of the season.

Blackburn then regained control and an own goal from Hermann Hreidarsson gave them the advantage.

Roberts grabbed his second and substitute Matt Derbyshire added a fourth to stun Charlton, who edged closer to the drop.

In contrast Blackburn still have an outside chance of Europe, either in the UEFA Cup or Intertoto Cup.

Roberts said: "We knew that Charlton would push on in the last 30 minutes. We kept plugging away and eventually the chances were created.

"We were opening them up quite well and were disappointed not to go in ahead at half-time but we managed to dig it out at the end."

With matches against Newcastle, Tottenham and Reading to come, manager Mark Hughes believes they can clinch a UEFA Cup spot for the second successive season.

He said: "We are going to give it a real go. We are more than capable of winning all three games.

"We still have a chance of a place in Europe - you saw that in our play against Charlton."

Manager Alan Pardew insists that Charlton can stay in the top flight.

They face Tottenham a week tomorrow before travelling to Liverpool on the final day of the season.

Pardew said: "We still have a chance of getting out of it. There will be some twists and turns.

"But I am not going to bother to work out how many points we might need.

"We are going to be playing on a Monday after everyone else, so have good idea by then what is wanted."
