EXCLUSIVE: Blacktown will host an FA Cup final curtain-raiser this weekend as Portsmouth and Cardiff City supporters do battle for early bragging rights.
While Harry Redknapp’s Premier League Pompey and Dave Jones’ Championship Bluebirds will meet at Wembley on May 17, fans here in Australia are keen to mark the occasion in their own special way.
On Saturday afternoon Portsmouth FC DownUnder Supporters Club will take on its Cardiff City counterpart at Morgan Power Reserve, home of Parklea FC.
Sadly neither club has been able to recruit the likes of Jermain Defoe, David James, Robbie Fowler or Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink but efforts are being made to secure one or two big names with Pompey/Cardiff connections.
A number of ‘ringers’ are being sought with Pompey hoping to land John Aloisi and Craig Foster while Cardiff look to tempt ex Bluebirds Tony Vidmar and Spencer Prior to pull on the boots.
Harvey Price of PompeyDownunder told au.fourfourtwo.com: “Our social secretary came up with this idea just after both teams had won their FA Cup semi-finals.
“He got in touch with the Cardiff group here in Australia and they agreed it would be a great prelude to the main event.
“We have a couple of members on the committee of Parklea Football Club and they have kindly agreed to let us have the pitch and changing rooms for the afternoon.
“I’m confident our team can win but I’m told Cardiff are looking to persuade Tony Vidmar and Spencer Prior to play. We’re looking at John Aloisi and Craig Foster but I’m not sure we’ll get them.
“We’re looking forward to it and we’d love to see any Portsmouth fans or Cardiff fans out there come along and cheer us on. It should be a really good day.
“This year has brought the magic back to the FA Cup, no question.”
The Australian version of the FA Cup final kicks off on Saturday (May 3) at 1pm.
