The head of football's world governing body says there is no reason why Australia cannot host the tournament.

Blatter is in Sydney for the annual FIFA World Congress commencing on 29 May, and met today with FFA Chairman, Frank Lowy.

Mr Blatter said despite tough opposition from the likes of England, Russia and the United States, Australia has a realistic chance to stage the World Cup.

"You can say we've been to Asia for the World Cup but Australia is something very special because it is quite a continent in itself," he told Football Federation Australia's official website.

"I think it would be a wonderful achievement if this can happen."

Mr Blatter says Australia's record of hosting world-class events will help its effort and that FIFA has a history of awarding the World Cup to emerging football nations.

"There is a European thinking in football by saying we are the owners of football because we have the best players but they have the best players because they have the highest amount of money," he said.

"This does not say that the executive committee of FIFA shall have an intercontinental approach. That's why in the first we went to Africa (for 2010)."

Mr Blatter also announced that FIFA would be making its decision on the 2018 and 2022 Cups at the same time, effectively meaning Australia could apply for 2022 if it missed out on 2018.
