FORMER A-League mentor Miron Bleiberg has returned to the coaching ranks, taking up an interim position with Oakleigh Cannons after last season’s VPL grand finalists parted ways with Bill Theodoropoulos.
Bleiberg, who sensationally fell-out with mining magnate Clive Palmer during the last days of the now defunct Gold Coast United, was at training last night running the rule over the underperforming squad.
The club confirmed the colourful football identity – who previously held the reins at Brisbane Roar prior to the ill-fated United stint – agreed to take the post as a favour to long-time friend and club general manager, Aki Ionnas.
Ionnas told au.fourfourtwo.com the break with Theodoropoulos was “mutual” and “amicable” and that Bleiberg had agreed to step in for a few weeks until a permanent replacement was installed.
“I’ve known Miron for seven or eight years, so I rang him up and asked if he could help the club and he said, yeah he was more than happy to assist,” Ionnas said.
“There’s a short turn around period so there’s not too much he can do at this stage – maybe add a little structure. Maybe he’s got a few different ideas.
“Obviously he’s very experienced in what he does and he’s coached at the highest level.”
Former Cannons player Theodoropoulos co-coached with Peter Zois last season, taking the team to the VPL’s showpiece decider where they lost 2-1 to Premiers Dandenong Thunder.
Theodoropoulos took over the top job in his own right this season but the squad, hampered by injuries, has struggled in the early stages of the campaign, racking up just five points in five rounds.
“We reached an agreement and left on good terms,” Ionnas remarked on Theodoropoulos’ departure. “It was unanimously decided by the whole board.
“We wish Billy all the best and we parted in nice terms. Billy’s a club man and we respect him and we always will respect him.”
Ionnas declined to speculate whether Bleiberg could have a longer term future with the club but said more details would emerge over the next 48 hours.
In the meantime the first assignment for the always quotable coach will be getting past the defending Premiers on Friday night.
