SUWON Samsung Bluewings made the best possible start to their Asian Champions League Group G campaign with a 4-1 thrashing of Kashima Antlers at Suwon World Cup Stadium.
Suwon took control of the clash between the league champions of South Korea and Japan, with goals by Chinese defender Li Weifeng and Brazilian striker Eduardo late in the first half.
Hong Soon-hak and Park Hyun-beom added to Kashima's misery before Marquinhos grabbed a consolation goal for the Japanese side in stoppage time.
Kashima started brightly and had the first clear chance after 13 minutes as Marquinhos fed Danilo inside the area only for the Brazilian to shoot straight at Lee Woon-jae.
The first half was a largely disappointing affair but Suwon took control of proceedings with two quick goals just before the interval.
The opener arrived after 44 minutes when the Kashima defence failed to deal with a free-kick floated into the box by Kim Dae-eui. The ball fell to China international Li, who lashed a ferocious half-volley into the roof of the net.
Seconds later, Hong broke clear down the left flank and crossed for an unmarked Eduardo to volley home at the far post.
Suwon carried on where they had left off after the restart and nearly extended their lead as Lee Sang-ho fed Kim Dae-eui, whose shot was superbly pushed around the post by Hitoshi Sogohata.
Suwon went close again after 67 minutes as Kim once again found space in the area only to be denied by the Kashima keeper.
Kashima's first serious attempt of the second half arrived with 18 minutes remaining when a rising shot from Marquinhos was smartly tipped over by Lee.
But with eight minutes remaining, Suwon extended their lead as Hong broke into the area after a superb one-two with Seo Dong-hyeon and fired in a low shot that Sogahata got a hand to but could not keep out.
The Korean champions made it 4-0 a minute into stoppage time when substitute Cho Yong-tae worked his way between two defenders on the left of the Kashima box before squaring the ball for Park to fire home.
Kashima managed a consolation just seconds later as Marquinhos rose unchallenged to head home for the visitors.
