Western Sydney Wanderers defender Aritz Borda has been slapped with a three-game ban following a foul on Melbourne City striker Bruno Fornaroli at AAMI Park on Friday.
A cracking 19th minute striker by Ivan Franjic – the only goal of the game – put City in front before Borda was given his marching orders on 30 minutes after he lifted his forearm to block Fornaroli.
The Match Review Panel ruled the Spaniard had committed the offence of “assault on a player (e.g. violent conduct when not challenging for the ball), including an attempted assault on a player”.
The minimum sanction for the offence is two matches (the mandatory match suspension plus an additional match), however the MRP has proposed a three-game sanction
The 32-year-old has until midday Tuesday to notify the MRP whether he plans to appeal the ban.
Meanwhile Wellington Phoenix striker Roy Krishna will be sidelined for just one match after a late challenge led to his straight red in the 62nd minute against Perth Glory on Thursday.
Glory came from behind to win 2-1 at home after Krishna had put the visitors ahead with a milestone strike – the 4000th A-League goal.
The MRP ruled Krishna was guilty of “serious foul play when challenging for the ball)” and handed down the minimum penalty of a mandatory one match suspension.
