Les Girondins came into the final round of fixtures with a three-point advantage over nearest challengers Marseille, and needing just a draw to clinch their first title since 1999.

Yoan Gouffran's effort was enough to seal the win which also ended Caen's stay in the top flight.

Marseille were emphatic 4-0 winners over Rennes but the result counted for little in the end.

In what was a tense match for both sides, Gouffran found the target three minutes after the interval and it was enough to separate the sides at Stade Michel d'Ornano.

The result also meant Marseille's impressive display against Rennes was fruitless.

Following a goalless first half, OM turned on the style with Bakari Kone and Mamadou Niang scoring two goals apiece for the home side, but they were unable to make up the deficit on the leaders.

While Bordeaux were celebrating the title, Caen were coming to terms with relegation to Ligue 2.

Their defeat, coupled with St Etienne's 4-0 rout of Valenciennes, meant Caen dropped into the bottom three on goal difference.

Araujo Ilan (13), Bafetimbi Gomis (53 and 56) and Kevin Mirallas (75) scored the goals which saved St Etienne from the drop.

Nantes' relegation was also confirmed tonight despite a 2-1 win over Auxerre.

Strikes from Ivan Klasnic (11) and Mamadou Bagayoko (52) sandwiched a Jeremy Berthod effort for Auxerre, but results elsewhere meant Nantes were unable to breach the gap to the safety zone.

Toulouse's goalless draw with Lyon, who had John Mensah sent off after 37 minutes, was enough for them to claim fourth spot in the table.

And Lille overcame the odds to clinch a top-five finish and a Europa League spot with a 3-2 win over Nancy.

Nicolas Plestan scored the winning goal for Lille after early strikes from Robert Vittek and Adil Rami had been cancelled out by Abdeslam Ouaddou and Youssouf Hadji for Nancy.

Lille claimed fifth spot from Paris St Germain, who missed out on a place in Europe with a goalless draw at home to Monaco.

Also tonight, Mevlut Erdinc scored the only goal as Sochaux beat Grenoble 1-0, Nice and Le Havre played out a 0-0 stalemate, and Lorient shared a 1-1 result with Le Mans.

Thorstein Helstad opened the scoring for Le Mans but Michael Ciani levelled matters.
