McDonald, who has only managed one goal all season for Boro, played a full game in the victory which keeps Mowbray's side in third.

The Australian, who hasn't played for the Socceroos since the Wales friendly in August, failed to get on the scoresheet yet again but played a part in Boro's second goal, releasing Faris Haroun who centred for Marvin Emnes to net.

"Scott's getting time on the pitch and playing and I'm sure the goals will come," Mowbray said.
"What he brings is a fantastic work ethic for the team and he plays in the shape we ask him to."

Rhys Williams, who was called up Osieck on Tuesday, put in a full shift too and fired an early headed chance straight at Doncaster keeper Neil Sullivan.

Elsewhere, Mile Jedinak was absent as Crystal Palace drew 0-0 with Portsmouth, although Eagles boss Dougie Freedman explained why after the game.

"Mile's had a baby boy, a wonderful little baby boy. He was up at 2am this morning so I didn't think it was fair on his family to bring him along tonight," Freedman said.

Meanwhile, Neil Kilkenny had a first-half shot hit the outside of the post as Bristol City drew 0-0 at promotion-hopefuls West Ham.

Over in Italy's Serie B, Carl Valeri played a full game in midfield as third-placed Sassuolo kept up their fine form with a 5-2 win at Modena.
